Building a Legacy of Innovation: Dr. Charlie Landis Reflects on His Journey with Integrity BioChem

At Integrity BioChem, innovation and perseverance are at the heart of everything we do. Recently, Dr. Charlie Landis, former Chief Technology Officer and a founding leader of IBC, joined Victoria Meyer on The Chemical Show to reflect on his career, the early days of Integrity BioChem, and the pursuit of sustainable, high-performance chemistry.

A Career Sparked by Curiosity

Charlie’s journey began with a fascination for the dynamic relationship between rocks and water, a field that evolved into aqueous geochemistry. Early in his career, he was driven by a passion for applying scientific concepts to real-world challenges, from oil exploration to water treatment solutions.

After earning his Ph.D. in geosciences, Charlie built his expertise across the energy and chemical sectors, including roles at Oracle Oil and Gas and Halliburton. But it was a conversation with Jimmy Jett, IBC’s future CEO, that sparked a new chapter. Together, they envisioned a vertically integrated chemical company, one that could control innovation from molecular design through to market delivery.

The Founding Vision for IBC

Charlie joined Integrity BioChem at its inception, drawn by the opportunity to build something from the ground up. The mission was simple but ambitious: to find overlooked materials and develop them into high-value, sustainable solutions.

The first breakthrough came with the development of a unique biopolymer. Unlike traditional large, linear polymers, IBC’s molecule was significantly smaller–about a thousand times smaller–offering superior performance for encapsulation and mineral control applications, particularly in oilfield operations.

“Our founding platform was about solving real problems,” Charlie explained. “By preventing fines migration in unconventional reservoirs, we helped customers unlock more value from their assets.”

Bridging Science and Commercial Value

One of IBC’s differentiators has been its ability to translate scientific discovery into real commercial value, which is a balance that many companies struggle to achieve.

Charlie credits this success to the team’s deep industry experience and shared vision. “It wasn’t just about finding a new molecule. It was about understanding the customer’s need, validating the science, and scaling manufacturing without compromise.”

This mindset allowed IBC to rapidly commercialize its first-generation technology, solving critical challenges for customers in oil and gas, industrial applications, and beyond.

Evolving into the Future: Second-Generation Innovation

During the early days of COVID-19, IBC faced a pivotal moment. Amid global uncertainty, the team remained focused and decided to move forward with developing a new class of bio-based surfactants.

“This was one of the most difficult professional decisions of my life,” Charlie shared. “But it represented the next leap for our company.”

Led by emerging scientific talent and supported by a highly experienced team, IBC successfully synthesized a novel bio-based surfactants technology, opening doors into broader specialty chemical markets. It wasn’t just about survival, it was about advancing innovation when many others paused.

The move required rapid scaling, intellectual property protection, and the expansion into new customer segments. Yet the founding spirit of IBC, courage, expertise, and curiosity, propelled the company forward.

Lessons in Innovation and Leadership

Reflecting on his career, Charlie shared timeless advice for young scientists and entrepreneurs:

  • Develop expertise in your field and constantly broaden your knowledge.

  • Stay passionately curious and let your mind explore beyond traditional boundaries.

  • Know when to decide, and do this by understanding how much information you need before acting, balancing certainty with courage.

“Persistence, passion, and pragmatic decision-making have been my cornerstones,” Charlie said. “At IBC, we didn’t wait for perfect conditions — we moved forward with conviction.”
